The biggest novelty this future setting brings is exoskeletons (or "exos" as the game insists on calling them) that make the soldiers all a little more potent. That means it's set in the futureĬovering about six years from 2054 to 2060, Advanced Warfare ditches the near-future setting of Modern Warfare in favor of something a little more exotic. A single-player mode is useful mechanically-it's a much better way to learn and feel comfortable with the game's movement and controls-but more importantly, a single-player campaign has the unique ability to tell stories and evoke reactions more nuanced than "Hell yeah, I killed a dude on the other team." Advanced. Put me in the camp that's glad to still have a single-player campaign in Call of Duty.

Other games have come from the opposite decision: the Battlefield series started as strictly multiplayer, but it added a single-player campaign after the first few games. There are many voices calling for some first-person shooter developers to abandon the single-player campaign altogether-as Titanfall did earlier this year-and focus exclusively on the multiplayer aspect. This is actually a divisive decision these days.

Sledgehammer, which contributed to Modern Warfare 3, is taking its first stab at a standalone Call of Duty game with Advanced Warfare.Īs with its many predecessors, Advanced Warfare weds a cinematic action movie of a single-player game to a frantic twitch-shooting multiplayer game. Treyarch will likely continue its Black Ops line, and one assumes that Infinity Ward will continue its mediocre Ghosts series. The increasing complexity of the Call of Duty games has led Activision to take a three-pronged approach, with three studios (Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer) developing three arcs in parallel. Whatever the reason, that same magic is just never there. Maybe it's simply because I've changed and Call of Duty hasn't. Maybe it's because Modern Warfare just happened to be the right game at the right time, ushering in something that managed to feel fresh and new after so many World War II games. Maybe it's because I've simply put the original Modern Warfare on an undeserved, nostalgia-tinged pedestal in my mind. Every year, I play the latest Call of Duty installment in the hope of recapturing the thrill that I felt playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the first time back in 2007.
